Mindfulness – Four Square Breathing

One valuable skill that I share with most clients is called Four Square Breathing. They say that incorporating this skill into their lives has helped them remain calm during distressful events or times in their lives, helped them manage their anger and frustration, gave them a chance to stop and analyze what was happening for them and make better choices. They’ve improved their friendships and relationships with others because they’re calmer. They’ve even said it helps them to live in the here and now, instead of worrying about what they did or what they’re going to do.
Many families use this skill when they sit down for dinner stating it helps calm everyone and gets them focused on each other and making positive memories during mealtimes.

One of the benefits of Four Square Breathing is there is a physical component to it as well because you count touching your thumb to each of your four fingers.

Here is how it’s done.
Breath in to a count of four
Hold for a count of four
Release to two counts of four
Do four breathing cycles.

Practice Four Square Breathing once a day and you will be able to access it the next time you need a little help.

Remember to make this breathing exercise your own and SHARE any positive benefits you find from using this skill 🙂
